ARTIST ROSTER - MIXED MEDIA

Jennifer Kunin

Minneapolis

I love working with elders because they bring such depth and life experience to their art. They have so much to express, and the younger generations have so much to gain from them through viewing their art and hearing what they have to say. Some older adults may never have had a chance to explore art. Others may not have been supported or encouraged in their creative process. I feel that offering them an opportunity to create their own art can stir up fresh new life in them. I coordinated and worked for two consecutive years on a COMPAS/MCKNIGHT funded program called Voices of the Elders, in which elders from the Hmong and North Minneapolis communities created masks and story cloth murals which were exhibited in the communities. See more about it at www.voicesoftheelders.org.

I have always had a passion for the arts. As a young mother, my home became the neighborhood gathering place for all the children to come to do art projects. When my children got older, I went back to school at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, where I got a BFA in fine arts with an emphasis on handmade paper and sculpture. I got my certification in Art Education for K–12 from the University of Minnesota, and I taught junior high school art in the Minneapolis Public Schools for three years. Then I decided to focus more of my time on developing my own art. Currently, I teach at art centers and offer private lessons, as well as a variety of art events. I have been on the Minnesota State Arts Board roster for artists in the schools for twelve years, and have been teaching artist residencies in the schools throughout the state of Minnesota.
