Heidi Nelson

White Bear Lake

Heidi E. Nelson has a talent for and greatly enjoys teaching students of all ages and abilities in a methodical step-by-step way with lots of demonstrations. She teaches drawing, painting in all mediums, and fun lessons in collage/found objects art that requires no rendering skills. Being a bit of a comedian, her classes are lots of fun. Heidi has a bachelor of fine arts in oil painting and has worked for 16 years in graphic design and commercial illustration. She found her love of teaching through homeschooling and now works at the White Bear Center for the Arts as one of their foundational teachers, teaching all painting media and drawing.

Awards

Heidi has won an award each year for the last five years at Northstar Watercolor's fall members show, and has been accepted in 2009 and 2003 to the Minnesota State Fair. In 2006, Heidi was exhibited her work at the Transparent Watercolor of America show in Chicago, she earned the Best Watercolor award at the Harmony in Arts show in 2007. Heidi’s work has also been accepted into the White Bear Center for the Arts Northern Lights show.

Services:

I use visual demonstrations and facilitate observation because learning to see is part of the process. I use varied ways of teaching to help students of differing learning styles, and use humor to keep the classes fun. Classes include: Subject-based, technique-based, and incremental watercolor/acrylic-in-a-watercolor-manner; subject-based and incremental drawing classes; creativity classes using collage and journaling to find untapped creativity; and oil painting/acrylic-in-a-oil-manner classes.

Availability:
Available in the Twin Cities metro area within 30 minutes of my home in White Bear Lake on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, mornings and early afternoons.

Fee: I like to have at least four students and charge $13.50 per student, using my supplies, but may lower my price for larger groups. I keep enough brushes to lend to a class 12. I also sell sets of the supplies I use for $16.
