PROVIDERS NEWS
The Metropolitan Regional Arts Council has awarded a $10,000 grant to MnCAAN for a pilot storytelling project in conjunction with Episcopal Homes.
The project, planned for fall 2010, will consist of a storytelling class for residents from three Episcopal Homes senior housing sites. The ten-week class will celebrate and teach the art of storytelling and the performing arts.
Participants will learn to share their life stories in unique and meaningful ways. Professional and predominantly older artists will guide students in understanding the art of storytelling through exploration of story narratives, vocal techniques, facial gestures, body movement/dance, music and song. The class will culminate in a group performance given for friends, family and community members in the St. Paul Midway area.
Using Lessons Learned
An extensive evaluation of the project will be conducted, and MnCAAN plans to use the lessons learned from the pilot to shape future storytelling curriculum and trainings. Another intention is to create a network of professional teaching artists who are trained and experienced in teaching storytelling to older adults.
